This international airport expansion project aimed to minimize any disturbance to the ongoing airport operation in Lagos such that the terminal could be expanded without major upset of scheduled flights. The design was developed to bring the current terminal in line with international aviation standards. Towards this aim a whole ranges of factors have been considered for upgrade.
A central theme in the interior design was to make use of colour as a means of assisting users of the airport to locate required destination zones. WCs, check-in areas, retail areas, F&B Zones have each been colour coded with a separate defining colour. In this way all users can make use of the colour coded way finding to navigate the airport.
The landscaped plaza at the front of the refurbished terminal building acts as a significant holding ground for arriving passengers, visitors and waiting families. By adopting a policy whereby only valid ticket holders can enter the airport it was possible to greatly reduce the congestion inside the terminal building itself while still providing suitable spaces for visitors and waiting families.
